Third Times a Charm
It was a week into bow season and I had seen a nice buck 20 yards from my stand. He was a few rows into the corn but I couldn’t get a good shot because the corn was too thick. Then the 1st of November while the farmer was cutting the corn I spotted him again with a doe running out which confirmed my hunch that they were bedding down there. They were about 75 yards away and still no chance for a shot.
Although I would have no idea, today would be different. I left the dentist office about 1:30 p.m., grateful for the extra time to get out to my treestand and get settled. It was now the second week in November and there was a southwest wind. It was early evening, before sunset, and I was hunting in my corner stand at the edge of the cut cornfield when I heard what was 3 does and 2 yearlings coming into the area. My stand was over 2 scraps so I hoped that a buck would soon follow. About a half-hour later I heard the brush crack again. He came out of the woods into the cut cornfield. He stood 22 yards out with his head up trying to wind the scraps. He put his head down which gave me the chance to draw back. When I saw my arrow hit the back of his rib cage I knew that the third time was a charm. He bucked just once after the arrow went through, then walked off in the same direction that he came from. I found him 60 yards away. He was a nice 8 point with an 18-inch spread that was obviously in rut from the size of his 28-inch neck. He dressed out at 180 lbs. I’m currently having this buck scored on the Boone & Crocket scoring system through a taxidermist. Check back to this web site for the official score.
