-Virtual-Hunt-2001-

Thursday September 6th

A quite day

Early this morning, David was out shooting his bow.  How did he miss that bear?  He shot some arrows with field tips, then some with his broadheads.  An unpleasant surprise!  His broadheads were shooting seven inches low and seven inches left.

David assured us that he had shot his broadheads before coming on the trip.  On the third day of our hunt, while unloading the quads, David's quad did an end over end, and it rolled over the bow.  He checked it out then and all appeared well, but there wasn't any question about how the broadheads where shooting.  He adjusted the bow and headed out to the same stand he had missed the bear the day before.

Jim and Bob had the day to themselves.  They  spent a little time fishing, but mostly just lounging around the cabin, and enjoying the nice fall weather.

Bear at bait

It had been a great trip for us.  We have all seen bear, Jim and Bob had shot bear, and David had his opportunities.  Bob got a chance to visit a couple of the fly in camps with Rick, the pilot of the outfit, and to seem some unbelievable  country.

Louie's Outpost and Timber Wolf Air have been in business now for some thirty years.  Louie is one of the most knowledgeable bear guides anywhere, and he has passed on his knowledge to his boys, Rob and Rick.  We where able to join both Rob and Rick in trailing a bear, and never have I seen anyone pick up trailing sign like they could.

The Outpost now runs nine different camps for fishing, bear hunting and limited Moose hunting.  Hunters can hunt right from the Blind River base camp, like we did, fly in to one of the fly in camps, or boat in to one of those camps.  Whatever level of solitude the hunter is looking for can be found at Louie's.

And let's not forget, Nancy, Louie's wife, nor their daughter-in-laws, Susan and Trena,  who all make up a necessary part of the team that makes these hunts so enjoyable.

David headed out, crossed the lake and was in his stand by 3:30.  It was a beautiful evening, light wind and clear sky.  The evening began to cool, and it looked like a perfect night to see bear.

But it was not to be tonight.  Although the bait had been hit there was no action at the bait.  David came in a little anxious with only one day left to hunt.  Louie assured him that he had as much chance of tagging a bear on the last day as he had on the first day.

After reviewing our options and looking at our video footage, we all agreed it was time to take a crack at the big bear David had seen on his first night on stand.  Tomorrow that was where David would be headed.  The weather forecast was calling for a possibility of showers tomorrow,  David might have to get wet.
